Agenda Highlights

Shaftwall framing offers a unique solution where accessibility is limited to one side of a wall. Contractor or engineer use shaftwall framing in 1- and 2-hr fire-rated wall construction for elevator shafts, duct enclosures, and stair walls. But what happens when an architect wants to by-pass floor levels, use shaft wall for exterior walls, or make shaft wall loadbearing? Or what if the wall height exceeds the limiting height?

This presentation will address common construction obstacles when it comes to framing shaftwall by understanding the product limitations in which it was tested, who is responsible for issuing engineering judgement(s), and when to get the shaftwall stud manufacturer and gypsum board manufacturer involved with the design professional. This presentation will include real-world examples of bad detailing of shaft wall and illustrate how the contractor and specialty engineer managed the final design and construction.
